Report: Trump 'annoyed' by Fauci, 'surprised' Yankees with first-pitch announcement

As Dr. Anthony Fauci prepared to throw out the first pitch of MLB’s season, President Donald Trump broke some baseball news of his own.

Trump announced in the middle of a COVID-19 press briefing last Thursday that he had been invited to throw out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game. He would do so on Aug. 15, a date that saw the rival Boston Red Sox visiting Yankees Stadium.

It turns out that announcement was news to the Yankees, according to a New York Times report published Monday.

There was one problem: Mr. Trump had not actually been invited on that day by the Yankees, according to one person with knowledge of Mr. Trump’s schedule. His announcement surprised both Yankees officials and the White House staff.”

Black areas plagued by voting problems in Georgia, activist says

As the U.S. prepares to adjust for an Election Day amid the coronavirus pandemic, Black Voters Matter co-founder LaTosha Brown said there are important lessons to be learned from Georgia's meltdown during the state's primary election in June. Brown spoke to CBSN's Elaine Quijano on July 27 — 99 days before Election Day — as part of the "Countdown to the Vote" special.

"What we saw was a major difference what was happening in majority White polling sites and majority Black polling sites," Brown said.

Brown, who voted in a part of Atlanta that is majority Black, said she witnessed this firsthand. After she herself waited three hours to vote, she then went to assist a voter who lived in a majority White area. "There was no line, there was no wait — It was like seamless," she said.

Brown then went a majority Black area, where there were people waiting in line for five hours. She said they went to those polling sites to provide comfort and boost morale, and they stayed past midnight until the last person in line finally voted.

Georgia's primary, originally scheduled for March 24, was held on June 9 after being postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic. But polling sites struggled with new voting machines that were purchased last year by Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger. Though poll workers voiced their concerns about the equipment, Raffensberger's office is putting the blame on the workers from individual counties for not knowing how to work the machines

In Fulton County, which includes Atlanta, the Superior Court ruled the polls could stay open an extra two hours to accommodate those stuck in long lines caused by the faulty equipment.

Brown said her organization, which she co-founded with Cliff Albright in November 2016, has filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia. The organization is also focused on voter education and poll monitoring ahead of the November election. Brown described them as a "power-building organization" in the "same spirit as John Lewis and C.T. Vivian."

can't have people with Health care during a pandemic now can we?

Senate's Covid-19 package tees up fight over Medicaid funding, hospital bailout

Senate Republicans’ coronavirus relief package, released Monday evening. sets up new battles over health care funding as the coronavirus continues to overwhelm the country.

From a smaller hospital bailout to stiffing strained Medicaid programs, the GOP’s opening bid revealed stark differences with the plan passed by House Democrats this spring. As Congress tries to resolve thorny issues like unemployment aid and liability protections, health care funding could become another sticking point.

Here’s what’s in the Senate’s bill on health care:

Senate Republicans are pitching a $25 billion boost to a hospital bailout fund, bringing the total to $200 billion when combined with past relief measures. That’s well short of the $100 billion infusion the industry has demanded — and that Democrats provided in their relief bill, which passed largely along party lines in May. The full funding request could be a hard sell on Capitol Hill, with the pace of elective procedures picking up again and some for-profit hospitals reporting larger earnings than expected. There’s also still money left from a previous bailout.

No additional dollars for Medicaid

Republicans decided against boosting federal funds for the safety net program, despite bipartisan calls from governors warning they’ll have to cut benefits without more federal help.

Congress in March approved a temporary 6.2 percentage point increase in federal matching dollars to state Medicaid programs. Governors and health care groups have urged Congress to bump up the match rate to at least 12 percentage points, while the House bill had raised it to 14 percentage points.

States already grappling with severe budget crunches have begun to curtail spending on their programs, though they’re barred from cutting back enrollment while they’re receiving the enhanced funds.

Testing funding makes it in

More dollars for coronavirus testing had appeared in jeopardy after the White House pushed Republicans to zero out funding. But as testing delays grew, Republicans rejected the demand and are including $16 billion more for testing, contact tracing and surveillance. Combined with money left over from previous relief packages, there would be $25 billion available for the public health measures.

However, that number is well short of the $75 billion Democrats have pitched for those efforts.

A boost for virtual care

The pandemic’s telehealth boom would live on. The legislation would allow the Department of Health and Human Services to continue expansive telehealth policies through at least the end of 2021. And for federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics, those policies can be extended for another five years after the coronavirus emergency ends.

Some telehealth advocates have been urging Congress to make more permanent changes to telehealth coverage in the newest relief package. But it appears lawmakers don’t want to commit to more sweeping changes until they’ve done further review of the technology, which took off practically overnight as lockdown measures went into place.

Hospitals get protection from malpractice lawsuits

Coronavirus-related liability protections were a top priority for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as well as hospitals. The bill would broadly shield hospitals and medical professionals from malpractice lawsuits around Covid-19, while capping damages. Hospital groups say legal risks have been a major barrier to resuming elective surgeries.

More leeway on hefty Medicare loans

Hospitals and physicians would also get more time to pay back Medicare for loans they’ve received to keep their doors open. Some hospital and physician groups have begged for total forgiveness of these loans, which have totaled more than $100 billion and are separate from the bailout funds Congress provided. Others have said they need more time to repay the government as they deal with the financial strain from Covid-19. The Senate package would give them a few more months to start repaying the loans on Jan. 1.

New Senate GOP coronavirus bill includes unrelated White House demand for FBI headquarters money

Under intense White House pressure, Senate Republicans agreed Monday to allocate $1.75 billion in their coronavirus relief bill toward the construction of a new D.C. headquarters for the FBI.

But top Senate Republicans immediately began distancing themselves from the provision after it was made public, saying they weren’t sure why the White House repeatedly insisted on putting it in the bill.

In calling for a new “Washington, DC headquarters facility,” the provision reflects President Trump’s ongoing interest in building a new headquarters for the FBI downtown, rather than a secure campus in the suburbs that was envisioned before he took office.

The evening before Gov. During a Monday news conference with White House adviser Dr. Deborah Birx, who is among the top coronavirus officials in the nation, Lee said he believes reopening schools in-person is best for children.

Senate GOP candidates attacked Obama over Ebola but defend Trump on coronavirus pandemic

In the run-up to the 2014 midterm elections, Republican David Perdue excoriated President Barack Obama over his handling of the Ebola outbreak -- contending that Obama had "failed to lead" and "took a serious threat far too lightly."

It's really sad what the GOP has become ever since its take over by Trump! It would be factually correct to state that the Republican Party no longer exists and its proper name should read "The Party of Trump". SAD!!

Again, no surprises here! It was obvious from this wannabe dictators inauguration and love of other world Dictators, ie., Kim, Vlad, Recep, et al, this action would come to pass!

The answer to this headline is simple! Trump needs a monument unto himself! His dream of "a big beautiful wall on the US southern border, the same one that Mexico was going to pay for, has proven to be a fools errand! Can't put a Trump name on a wall that's not being built and not being paid for by Mexico! Next best thing in his pipe dream, "Why not an "FBI Trump Headquarters" edifice?" Wish I had thought of that before Trump did! I bet I could've gotten a few bucks from him for that great idea!
