McKinley, a career diplomat, is said to have been deeply disturbed by the fact that Trump hung Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch out to dry and that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo failed to stand up for the respected envoy.
McKinley reportedly resigned over the firing of Yovanovitch as ambassador to Ukraine in the spring and attempts to discredit her by Trump acolytes.
He wrote in a resignation letter that he planned to “pursue other opportunities, wherever they might lead,” a euphemism for not disclosing the real reason for his departure.
