Another MAGA conspiracy theory implodes: Arizona man was not an FBI plant to stage Jan. 6 attack after all

On Thursday, The New York Times revealed new evidence debunking a longtime conspiracy theory among Trump supporters about the January 6 Capitol insurrection: that an Arizona man named Ray Epps was deputized as an FBI informant to instigate the attack.

"The claims, made in congressional hearing rooms, on Fox News and at Mr. Trump’s political rallies, have largely been based on a video taken just before violence erupted at the Capitol, showing Mr. Epps at the barricades outside the building whispering into the ear of a man named Ryan Samsel," reported Alan Feuer.

"Within moments of the brief exchange, Mr. Samsel, a Pennsylvania barber, can be seen moving forward and confronting the police in what amounted to the tipping point of the riot. Despite lacking proof for their claims, many Republicans have surmised that Mr. Epps instructed Mr. Samsel to antagonize the officers. They have also pushed the notion that because Mr. Epps has not been arrested, he must have been working for the government."

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-NC) got more than he bargained for on Thursday when he complained about the alleged mistreatment of some of America's most profitable corporations.

During a hearing on labor rights, Graham complained that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was "demonizing" successful businesses by bringing them before the United States Senate Committee on the Budget and grilling them about their union busting tactics.

We asked Republican senators for evidence that 'the left' leaked the Supreme Court abortion opinion. They didn't have any.

  • Republican lawmakers have accused "the left" of leaking the court's draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.
  • It's unknown who leaked the document, and there's no concrete evidence to suggest it was a progressive.
  • "I never said I know who the leaker is," said Hawley, despite calling the leak an "assault" by "the left."
When Politico first published a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade on Monday night, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri was the first US senator to publicly weigh in, focusing on the extraordinary breach in court norms.

The left continues its assault on the Supreme Court with an unprecedented breach of confidentiality, clearly meant to intimidate," he tweeted at 9:05 pm, within an hour of the story's publication. "The Justices mustn't give in to this attempt to corrupt the process. Stay strong."

He followed up shortly thereafter with praise for Associate Justice Samuel Alito's draft opinion, which he called "voluminously researched, tightly argued, and morally powerful."

By the next day, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was echoing Hawley's assumption, arguing in a statement that "by every indication" the nearly unprecedented leak constituted "yet another escalation in the radical left's ongoing campaign to bully and intimidate federal judges and substitute mob rule for the rule of law."

And by Wednesday, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas had confidently declared that "there was one woke little left-wing twit" at the high court who had decided to "sneak it out in order to put political pressure on justices."

But no concrete evidence has emerged in the public domain that points towards the left — or the right, for that matter — as the source of the leak.

"I never said I know who the leaker is," Hawley said on Thursday when Insider pressed him for evidence to support his claims.

Still, a slew of prominent Republican lawmakers in Washington have raged at the political left over the leak, in some cases insisting that the leak itself is more important than the possible revocation of a constitutional right.

'Dancing Monkey' Lindsey Graham Performs For Donald Trump In 'Extraordinary' New Audio

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) sucks up to former President Donald Trump just weeks after the deadly U.S. Capitol riot in new audio released by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns.

Graham initially condemned Trump’s incitement of the violence on Jan. 6, 2021.

But the audio that Martin and Burns shared on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” on Thursday shows how his denunciation of Trump had a “pretty fast expiration date,” said Burns.

In the audio, Trump takes a telephone call from Graham while being interviewed by the reporters in the lobby of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, for their book “This Will Not Pass” which was released Tuesday.

  • Trump said Republicans should "probably" fear him if their views aren't in line with his.
  • He referred to his endorsement record as "unparalleled."
  • However, some Trump candidates have still struggled in their races despite his backing.
Former President Donald Trump this week appeared to issue a warning that Republicans not aligned with him would lose their races if they did not correct course.

Florida Republicans won't let go of Disney's campaign cash

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vilified the Walt Disney Co. as “dishonest” and hypocritical. He pushed to strip it of a special tax status and punish its leaders for challenging his policies.

But DeSantis and most Republicans in Florida, where Disney operates its flagship theme park, won’t return hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash they received from the entertainment giant.

Most won’t even discuss it.

Disney and its affiliates have donated more than $2.3 million in Florida this election cycle, which includes money to elected officials, their political committees and committees run by one of the state’s main business groups. That total includes providing hotel rooms and theme park tickets as well as campaign checks. Money has flowed to individual legislators as well as political committees controlled by Republican and Democratic leaders.

But DeSantis and many state Republicans have refused to return campaign contributions to the California-based entertainment giant, which they have blasted over Disney’s opposition to a law that bans instruction of gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade. Late last month, DeSantis and the Legislature stripped the company of special privileges that allowed it to operate as its own municipal government in central Florida.

Disney has given the Republican Party of Florida $255,000 in checks since January 2021 as well as nearly $142,000 worth of in-kind donations that covered lodging, food and entertainment costs of visiting Disney parks. The party, however, declined to answer questions about whether it would return any donations.

D.C.'s Lawsuit Against Donald Trumps Ends At A Huge Cost

Former President Donald Trump has become known for his legal troubles. His battles within the courts started as early as a few months after he took office (via Rolling Stone). He forked over $25 million to settle legal charges against Trump University, which scammed students out of millions of dollars. His legal woes from within the White House walls didn't end there. Soon after, he had to pay $2 million for shady dealings under the name of his charitable organization.

Once Trump was voted out of office, his legal issues only worsened. According to the BBC, he's facing several lawsuits. From his alleged role in the January 6th Capitol riots to claims that funds for his 2017 inauguration were misused, Trump is in deep with the American justice system.

While there is a chance he could face jail time, it's more likely that these court cases will end with hefty fines paid by the former president. Recently, one of these lawsuits came to a close with a giant price tag attached.

D.C. Non-Profits Will See Thousands In Cash From Trump's Settlement

When Former President Donald Trump left the White House in 2020 he was involved with 29 lawsuits (via the Independent). The outlet reports that Trump has allegedly faced an alarming total of 4,000 cases, two impeachments and divorces, six bankruptcies, and 26 allegations of sexual assault. If he is indicted on criminal charges in any of these cases, he would be the first president in history to do so.

One of those lawsuits has officially come to a close and not at a small cost. According to AP News, Trump's businesses and inaugural committee have settled in a Washington D.C. court. The charges against the administration note that the committee overpaid for events at Trump's hotel, allowing the family to profit. Court documents note that the suit is being settled "to avoid the cost, burden, and risks of further litigation" and that the Trump organization "disputes these allegations on numerous grounds and denies having engaged in any wrongdoing or unlawful conduct,"

The settlement of $750,000 will be paid to the court and distributed to nonprofits. Attorney General Karl Racine tweeted that this case sets a precedent, "We're resolving our lawsuit and sending the message that if you violate DC nonprofit law—no matter how powerful you are—you'll pay."
