In polygyny, a dominant male mates with numerous females and many males don't get to mate at all. On average this is the case with humans, as men tend to be bigger than women, and this suggests that polygyny was a major factor at some point in our history. So alpha males were mating with most of the females and many, so called beta males, were not mating at all.

From this type of life-history and social structure there develops a particular psychology in all participants, the alpha males, beta males and females. For recent periods in our history this primal psychology has been subdued or denied due to religious, social and cultural influences but now parts of it seem to be returning as religious and cultural doctrines lose their power.

I feel that in some societies the opportunities are now there to enact and live-out those primal desires that have long been subdued.
