McCarthy to Commit 'Multiple Crimes' by Refusing Jan. 6 Subpoena: Kirschner

Glenn Kirschner said Saturday that the House minority leader would "rather commit crimes himself" than discuss what he knows about Donald Trump's actions.

House investigators issued a subpoena for McCarthy, a California Republican, as well as four other GOP members of Congress on May 12. The House minority leader, an ally of former President Donald Trump, has been highly critical of the committee's work since it began last year, and in a Friday statement asserted that he was unlikely to comply. The 11-page response to the January 6 committee by McCarthy's legal counsel argued that the House members were "not exercising a valid or lawful use of Congress' subpoena power."​

"While Congress maintains a vast and awesome power of constitutional oversight to serve as an important piece of our system of checks and balances and separation of powers, it is undemocratic for a majority party to attempt to use the full ******* of the federal government to attack perceived political rivals," the California Republican's lawyer wrote.​

"I think as a matter of principle the J-6 committee must refer Kevin McCarthy for a criminal contempt of Congress if he chooses to thumb his nose at the subpoena," the legal expert, who has three decades of trial experience, said. "Somebody better tell Kevin McCarthy to buckle up buttercup, because there are a whole lot of crimes that you will be committing if you continue to conceal the misconduct of [former President] Donald Trump—the crimes of Donald Trump from the J-6 committee and by extension from the American people," Kirschner continued, adding that McCarthy may "potentially" be committing the crime of "accessory after the fact" as well as "misprision of a felony."​

After the interview, Kirschner released a YouTube video doubling-down on his assessment. He said that McCarthy would "rather commit crimes himself" over discussing what he knows about the former president's actions with the House investigators.​

Mr Cruz, who has long supported gun ownership rights, attended the National Rifle Association (NRA)’s annual meeting in Houston on Friday. He told the crowd how Democrat ‘elites’ were trying to ‘disarm Americans’ in their bid to ban AR-15s, the weapon used in most school shootings.​

This is the second major shooting in the US this month, after an attack in Buffalo, New York, killed 10 people on May 14. In both incidents, the attackers legally bought AR-15-type rifles when they were just 18, an age deemed acceptable for gun purchases but not to ******* alcohol or drive. The Uvalde shooting was the second deadliest attack in US history, surpassed only by the 2021 Sandy Hook massacre, which also saw an AR-15 used.​

The same kind of weapon was also used in a 2018 school shooting in Florida, a 2019 El Paso slaughter, an Ohio shooting which happened the next day and a music festival shooting in 2017.​

Five Republican candidates for governor in Michigan — including top-tier contenders James Craig and Perry Johnson — failed to qualify for the August primary Thursday after the Board of State Canvassers rejected their nominating petitions because of alleged rampant signature fraud. The bipartisan panel, made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, deadlocked 2-2 along party lines in accepting recommendations by the state Elections Bureau to disqualify all five. A majority was required to keep a candidate on the ballot.​

State officials charged with reviewing the nominating petitions this week declared thousands of signatures submitted by the candidates to be forgeries submitted by fraudulent petition circulators. Their findings, which the board considered Thursday, left the five candidates short of the 15,000 valid signatures required to qualify for the ballot. Thursday's result is expected to be challenged in court. The state's director of elections said the issue needs to be decided by June 3 to leave time to prepare ballots.​

The developments could trigger a colossal shakeup in the race for governor, which Republicans are heavily targeting in hope of unseating Democratic incumbent Gretchen Whitmer. If the board's decision stands, an initial field of 10 GOP candidates would be cut in half, without two of its most viable candidates: Craig, a former Detroit police chief who has led in recent polls, and Johnson, a businessman who promotes himself as a "quality guru" and had planned to self-fund his campaign.​

To get on the primary ballot for governor in Michigan, candidates needed to submit a minimum of 15,000 signatures from registered voters, including at least 100 voters in half of the state’s 14 congressional districts, by the April 19 deadline. Democrats challenged the petitions of several Republican candidates and alleged widespread forgery a week later. State Elections Director Jonathan Brater said the state’s subsequent review of qualifying petitions filed by many candidates found an “unprecedented” level of fraud. The Elections Bureau concluded that 36 petition circulators submitted 68,000 invalid signatures in nominating petitions this year, forging the signatures of registered and unregistered voters alike in bulk. The petition circulators, who were paid by the signature, were frequently hired by multiple Republican candidates.​

"The circulators here committed fraud," Brater said. "This was not a mistake, these circulators knew they were doing this, they did this deliberately, and staff is confident in saying these signatures should not be counted."​

​

Nearly half of Craig’s submitted signatures and just over 40 percent of Johnson’s were deemed invalid in large part because of fraud, the bureau said in reports detailing its review of each candidate’s petitions. Brown withdrew from the race this week. At Thursday's contentious hearing, the four other candidates — in person or through staff members — protested the state's review process and argued their candidates shouldn’t be kept off the ballot.​

Tony Daunt, a Republican member of the board, was sympathetic to that argument. “Without question, a widespread and disgraceful effort to defraud the voters of the state has occurred,” said Daunt, who said he believed the signatures required more investigation. “The burden of proof, however, to deprive citizens of their rights is wholly the responsibility of the government.”​

Mary Ellen Gurewitz, the board's Democratic vice chair, rejected that idea. "For Republicans to come in and say, 'Well, there are just too many to be checked and therefore you have to accept them,' that is unacceptable in my estimation," Gurewitz said before she voted to disqualify James and the four others. "I think that we have to rely upon and respect, because it's sound, the recommendation of the bureau with regard to this particular challenge to candidates."​

Never said they were ... usually political cartoons simply make fun of the obvious lies the originator of the topic is trying to cover up ... like Trump saying there were more people at his inauguration than Obama's. Back to the covid roll-out, Trump said he had successfully rolled out the vaccines for covid-19. All he did, as I've said a hundred times, and what even TRUMP admits to, was have his administration distribute the vaccines to the STATES, then charged the states with rolling the vaccines out to the people. THAT is not a DISTRIBUTION PLAN as ultimately many people not receiving their vaccines. This all happened in REAL TIME ... I totally remember it happening. Then, as the Biden administration began looking at what had been done, Trump's administrators were busy destroying their notes of what they had done so the Biden admin had to start from SCRATCH in February of 2021. Doing what he'd done many times ... being an obstructionist to investigations, except this one impacted the PEOPLE of the USA and resulted in many thousands of lives being lost.
