Politics, Politics, Politics

The thing that is so concerning to me is that the Republicans are so OPEN & BRAZEN about it. They're not hiding their plans, they are preping for when the voting starts and then every Republican state (26 I think) all have voter suppression tactics they are putting in place.

Ballot harvesting took place here in NC in the 2016 election. Mail-in ballot requests are a matter of public record, so two Republicans got the list and went to the residencies of these people to collect the ballots, even to help them complete the ballots, etc. Then they tossed out the completed ones voting Democrat, completed the forms that weren't complete and deposited them.
One is in prison now, the other is up for trial sometime this summer.

I remember that.

NC is crazy. I had a lot of friends in grad school (at cornell, don't think I'm outing myself too much) that were first-gen immigrants who absolutely adored the education system there when they were growing up and all the opportunities it offered them. One is a well-regarded professor, another is a semi-famous doctor who worked a lot with Doctors Without Borders

both were livid with how NC has declined, and how conservatives were able to dismantle the amazing public school system that gave them so many opportunities. Of course that happened after SCOTUS decided it didn't need to keep tabs on bussing or equal opportunity for students anymore.

I really love the old NC, and I think the people of NC do too. It's tragic how it's being torn apart nowadays.

When the Democrats won the governorship in NC the Republican general assembly began changing the powers of the governor so he wouldn't interfere with what they were doing.
The NC Lotto here is an education lotto with half of the lotto money going to fund public schools. However, Republicans wanted to install a voucher program & private school option and saying the public schools were so bad that they were going to start taking part of the education lotto money to help fund their private school voucher program. Problem is, there are no private schools in the inner cities, so the city schools got poorer and the private schools got the money which richer white ******* were then using to get discounts on attending rural private schools. The Democrats & governor can't seem to change it.

Besides that, if a black inner school kid went to a private school that kid would have to be driven there (no buses) AND still come up with at least a third of the cost related to the school they attended .... approximately $5,000 or more. Poor familioes don't have that kind of money.

I remember Wisconsin going through this exact same thing -- when the republican was in charge he was the dictator of WI, but when he lost the election they immediately stripped all the powers

NC is also gerrymandered to all fuck and back. Isn't there some mind-boggling disparity between the party leaning of NC residents (like 60% democratic) and the state reps (some crazy amount republican)?

Although that are way more registered Democrats than Republicans, in NC it takes 1.3 Democrat votes to offset 1 Republican vote due to the gerrymandering.

The Tea Party Republicans back in 2010 are the ones that started all that crap. Really screwed the state up terribly.

the Tea Party was one of the main factors that convinced me that leftism was actually viable and smart

if you're willing to go to bat, you can win. and being leftist means winning health care, opportunity, and fairness for everyone. That's something worth going to bat for.

of course the left has yet to reach the organizing ability of the tea party (mostly because they were funded by a few billionaires like the Koch brothers or by the Mercers)

but in the long run, being right and being moral wins over funding. Every time.

Tea Party started losing their big money when the Koch Brothers quit contributing to them. One of them is dead now .. .Charles, I think.

Well, that is changing to, now ... as of last week the Religious Right is in turmoil over kid molestations in the Southern Baptist churches that have been swept under the pulpits for years. The Religious Right are starting to fall apart here.

yeah that's accurate.

now they've got Peter Theil though, and the Mercers still provide a lot of funding to really shady *******
That's why ALL donations, of any size, need to be transparent ... the people have the right to know who's trying to buy elections with big cash.

ugh, that's horrible. I haven't kept up with all that

I grew up in SC and spent a lot of time in evangelical churches. Luckily I encountered none of that.

My (catholic) ex was absolutely shattered by reports like this though

Its REAL and just catching wind. So much human excrement going on in politics, I guess it makes Trump happy its happening ... takes some of the dogs off him.

Oh, and here in NC most all the Republicans running in the election are refusing to debate anyone. Amazing ... pulling a Trump strategy. Trump has already said he isn't going to debate this time around in the general election.

trump was always a patsy, honestly. he was smart about making as much money as he could in office, but he was always just a symbol. nobody really believed in his ability to lead, even the people that voted for him

... and the New York vs Trump lawsuit to proceed says the judge ...

Trump alleged in the suit that New York Attorney General Tish James violated his constitutional rights by launching an investigation into the Trump Organization “in bad faith and without a legally sufficient basis.” James in the probe is exploring whether alleges the Trump Organization misstated the values of assets in financial statements — a claim that emerged out of Congressional testimony from a former Trump lawyer.
The decision comes just one day after a state appeals court ruled that Trump would have to sit for a deposition under oath in the investigation — shooting down Trump’s attempt to appeal the enforcement of subpoenas for him and his two eldest children.
