Major credible sources say PVC without pthalates is widely considered safe. I would definitely be interested to read more though, if you have something else other than a Reddit thread about an unconfirmed blog.
I shared that link for brevity. The first comment on that Reddit thread made the two important points:
1. PVC is porous. You can't sanitize a PVC dildo.
2. PVC obviously has plasticizers to make it that soft and flexible. Manufacturers, however, don't have to be honest about whether or not sex toys have phthalates because sex toys aren't regulated. (Doc Johnson products, for example, have been shown to be unreliable.)
Major credible sources say PVC should be avoided in children's toys and pets' toys and even vinyl flooring.
Unconfirmed blog? Dangerous Lilly has spoken on the subject of sex toy safety at the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit. The resources on her web site are excellent: http://dangerouslilly.com/toxictoys/

The resulting information isn't anything new. You can find "adult novelty" items made out of PVC but the reputable companies (e.g. Tantus, Vixen) make dildos out of silicone. You can sanitize silicone in boiling water or in a mild bleach solution. You also don't have to worry about silicone toys "melting" over the years or transferring pigment to nearby items.
