Sororities, and fraternities, as we know them today, are vastly different from the days of their founding in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While some people will say that they exist only as a reason to get ******* and throw parties, sororities and fraternities exist as social organizations compromised of men (fraternities) and women (sororities) who share common values, provide their members with a sense of camraderie, as well as providing networking opportunities (during and after college), as well as contributing to society through charitable work. Also, there are fraternities and sororities that are service oriented, based on major course of study, religious oriented, and cultural (historically black and latino/latina, as well as for gays and lesbians.)
