With the crisis in Kazakhstan beginning to stabilise, it’s been fascinating to observe China’s role and how it has been offering support to its government at the most senior level.

On Friday, leader Xi Jinping spoke to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, assuring him he would support the country against foreign interference. On Monday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi called Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi, pledging “necessary support and assistance to the Kazakh side.”

An editorial in the Global Times over the weekend also made clear that “China needs security coordination with neighbouring countries over Kazakhstan.” It was claimed that due to “China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its energy imports, the Central Asian state's stability represents a high stakes issue.”

Whilst Russia has taken the lead regarding the crisis in Kazakhstan, the consensus in Beijing is that China cannot stand on the sidelines and allow a potentially hostile government to take over in a strategically important neighbour. This puts its decades-old ‘non-interference’ policy to the test and opens up a new dynamic in its own relationship with the United States.

Jamaican authorities have arrested a former Haitian senator who is a prime suspect in the ******* of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.
John Joel Joseph was arrested on Friday, Jamaica Constabulary ******* spokesman Dennis Brooks said.
Mr Moïse was shot dead on 7 July by gunmen who stormed his residence in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
Soon after, then-National Police Chief Leon Charles said Mr Joseph supplied weapons and planned meetings.
Mr Brooks declined to comment on whether the arrest happened following a request by the FBI in the United States, which is also investigating the *******.
A 124-page Haitian police investigative report states that Mr Joseph "was instrumental in his fierce will to ******* the president", the Miami Herald reports.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said on Tuesday that he doesn't support President Biden's pick to fill a district court vacancy in his home state, likely dooming the nomination absent a shift by Democrats.

Johnson said that he would oppose William Pocan, who was nominated by Biden to be a district court judge in the eastern district of Wisconsin. It marks the first time during the Biden administration a senator has not returned a blue slip — a piece of paper that indicates if a home-state senator supports a nominee — for a district court nominee.

“Since Judge Pocan’s nomination, I have been hearing concerns from the Green Bay legal community that they needed a judge who is locally based and actively involved in their community. That is not the case with Judge Pocan," Johnson said in a statement.

Former President Trump issued a series of endorsements on Wednesday backing several Texas Republicans who are seeking reelection to the House.

Trump issued endorsements for Reps. Lance Gooden, Troy Nehls and Randy Weber. All three Texas Republicans voted against certifying the 2020 electoral results showing President Biden's win.

Gooden, who is running for reelection in the state's 5th District, was hailed by the former president as "a steadfast supporter of our America First agenda."

"He is fighting to Secure our Border, Uphold the Rule of Law, Support our Military and Vets, Protect the Second Amendment and Hold the Biden Administration accountable for their failures. Lance has my Complete and Total Endorsement!" Trump wrote in the endorsement.

Trump also backed Nehls, who recently accused the Capitol Police of spying on his office late last year.

President Biden appeared alongside a vulnerable House Democrat in Ohio on Thursday to promote the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law and a $1 billion investment to restore the Great Lakes that the law funds.

Biden traveled to Lorain, Ohio, and delivered a speech focused on the Great Lakes initiative and the broader infrastructure law, saying it would bring jobs to Ohio while also fixing highways, removing lead pipes and expanding access to broadband.

“It’s going to allow the most significant restoration of the Great Lakes in the history of the Great Lakes," Biden said. "We’re rebuilding America."

Biden quoted novelist Toni Morrison, a native of Lorain, during his speech as he promised more prosperous days for the community were ahead.

“Places like Lorain have a lot of proud yesterdays. Now they’re going to have some brighter tomorrows,” he said, echoing a famous quote from Morrison’s novel “Beloved.”

White House chief of staff Ron Klain on Thursday signaled that the White House would extend the freeze on student loan payments again, following no mention of student loans at the State of the Union earlier in the week.

“The president is going to look at what we should do on student debt before the pause expires, or he’ll extend the pause,” Klain said on an episode of the podcast “Pod Save America” that aired on Thursday.

The payment pause, which first began through a moratorium enacted under then-President Trump in March 2020, has been extended five times. It is set to expire in on May 2 after Biden extended it in January.
