Heterosexuality and homosexuality were invented in 1868 - as published on BBC Future.

The concept that an individual has a sexuality was suggested by a Hungarian journalist in 1868 (Karl Maria Kertbeny), who suggested four sexualities, i.e. heterosexual, homosexual, monosexual and heterogenit.

Sexual acts can be categorised as heterosexual (different sex) or homosexual (same sex), but the concept that the person performing heterosexual acts was any different from a person performing homosexual acts did not exist.

Individuals who masturbate more than they fuck would not have been categorised as heterosexual or homosexual, but monosexual, i.e. a wanker.

The most surprising thing is the fourth type of sexual behaviour that was recognised in 1868, heterogenit.

Great article. The bipolar concept of hetero vs homo has always been an artificial construct.
Artificial is a good word for it, I had been thinking a combination of illogical and inaccurate...

It seems illogical to use a term that compares two genders to label an individual.

The seems to be a tendency to categorise an individual based on a single sexual act rather than all of their sexual behaviour, which just seems inaccurate.

If you get plastered in the pub once a month ------ you are ------> a regular drinker.
If you only get plastered in the pub once ------ you are ------> a wall.
