The concept that an individual has a sexuality was suggested by a Hungarian journalist in 1868 (Karl Maria Kertbeny), who suggested four sexualities, i.e. heterosexual, homosexual, monosexual and heterogenit.
Sexual acts can be categorised as heterosexual (different sex) or homosexual (same sex), but the concept that the person performing heterosexual acts was any different from a person performing homosexual acts did not exist.
Individuals who masturbate more than they fuck would not have been categorised as heterosexual or homosexual, but monosexual, i.e. a wanker.
The most surprising thing is the fourth type of sexual behaviour that was recognised in 1868, heterogenit.
